Provost’s Multidisciplinary Awards Announced
Five diverse research projects at the University were selected as recipients of the fifth annual Provost’s Multidisciplinary Awards. In 2007 President Joel Seligman established an initiative providing $250,000 each year to support faculty research that crosses disciplines.

Faculty to Be Honored for Teaching Excellence
The University will recognize four faculty members for teaching excellence during commencement ceremonies this weekend. Karen DeAngelis, assistant professor in educational leadership, Warner School, will be awarded the G. Graydon Curtis ’58 and Jane W. Curtis Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Nontenured Member of the Faculty. Lane Hemaspaandra, professor of computer science, will be presented the Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Gautam Mitra, professor of geology, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award in Graduate Education. Robert Wason, professor of music theory, will receive the William H. Riker University Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching.

Longtime Faculty Member William Bernhard Dies
William Bernhard, a Medical Center faculty member for more than 40 years and an internationally known expert on the effects of ionizing radiation on the chemical structure of DNA, died May 9 at his home in Mendon, after a brief illness. University flags will be lowered in his honor May 24.

Beijing Olympics Reveal Air Pollution’s Effect on Health
A team of researchers has taken advantage of the unique circumstances surrounding the 2008 Olympics in Beijing to examine the link between air pollution and health. “This study clearly shows that a large scale intervention to reduce air pollution can have an immediate positive effect on health,” says David Rich, assistant professor of community and preventive medicine and first author of the study.

The eighth annual Aging Research Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, May 18, in Goergen Hall. It’s an opportunity for establishing or enhancing scientific interactions among scientists interested in aging research.

Fiscal Year-End Deadline for Finance Forms
As the University’s fiscal year end approaches on June 30, the Finance Department asks that you submit your paperwork early in order to ensure that all financial transactions are recorded properly and in the current fiscal year. Forms include:
• Request for Payment (F-4), Student Expense Report for University Business (F-34)
• Journal Entry Requests/Corrections (Cost Transfer Form)
• Employee Expense Reports (F-3)
• Payroll Reallocation Changes (Form 800)
